Margaret Schulte Memorial Scholarship
The Schulte Family arrived in Davie County in the 1960’s having lived in Virginia, West Germany, and Texas. They settled in Farmington. Margaret (Maggie) was a stay-at-home wife/mother after teaching for a short time. Her husband Mickey worked as an Electrical Engineer for Western Electric and Bell Labs. Maggie and Mickey moved his parents, lovingly known by all at Ascension Church as “Mom and Pop” to Davie County.
Maggie and Mickey had one son, Karl. Karl grew up in Germany while his dad worked there heading up the Titan Rocket program for the United States Government. Karl married Lucy Midkiff at The Church of the Ascension in Fork in 1970. Both attended Appalachian State University in Boone. Lucy worked as a librarian in Forsyth County for 30 years, and Karl was a Crime Scene Investigator for the Winston Salem Police Department for 30 years. Karl and Lucy lived in Kernersville but attended church in Fork each Sunday.
After his parents and wife passed away Karl did not have any relatives remaining, so the members of Church of the Ascension became his family. Karl passed away in July of 2018 and left his assets to Church of the Ascension.
Karl requested that part of his estate help deserving Davie County students continue their education in memory of his mother. The Margaret Schulte Memorial Scholarship was established in 2020.
The Margaret Schulte Memorial Scholarship is awarded to worthy high school and college students selected by a committee from Episcopal Church of the Ascension at Fork.
