Hanes Smith Scholarship
Chris Hanes is a 1979 graduate of Davie High School and received the Blanche Eaton scholarship from his church. He received an Associate’s Degree in Industrial Management and has been employed by Piedmont Natural Gas in Winston-Salem since 1984. Chris was also a volunteer with Mocksville Fire Department where he attained the rank of captain and retired after nearly 22 years.
Alice Smith Hanes is a 1976 graduate of Davie High School and received a Veterans’ Scholarship and the White Martin Scholarship. She attended UNC-Chapel Hill for two years until her father passed away and she came home to help her mother out during this transition. Alice later continued her education at Winston-Salem State University, receiving her BS in Early Childhood Education. She has been employed with Davie County 911 Communications since 1984 and has also substituted in the Davie School System, as well as volunteered at Central Davie Academy and with the Back Pack Buddy Program at Mocksville Elementary School.
Alice and Chris married in 1990 and have no children. Both are active members at Mocksville First United Methodist Church. They are Carolina fans and love Atlanta Braves baseball. They have taken an active role in their niece and nephew and great nieces’ education and have contributed to their college funds. Since Chris and Alice were both scholarship recipients themselves, they wanted to pay it forward and positively impact the community and youth of Davie County. Chris and Alice established the Hanes-Smith scholarship for Davie High graduates who may not have the top grades because they have to work to help their family out during these hard economic times.
The Hanes Smith Scholarship is available to a Davie High School or Davie County Early College senior needing financial assistance.
