For one local student, a dream that began in high school is now a thriving career in nursing. Macana (Goins) Louya graduated from Davie County High School in 2019 and went on to attend Davidson-Davie Community College. Today, she is a charge nurse at Kernersville Endoscopy Center.
Macana was the 2019 scholarship recipient of the B. Edwin & Ivy Nell Boger Family Scholarship. “My scholarship helped me achieve my dream of becoming a Registered Nurse,” she said. Macana was able to take the CNA class in high school and complete her prerequisites early to enter the ADN program at DDCC right after graduation.
As a student, she was focused and resourceful, choosing a community college over a four-year university to avoid unnecessary debt, an approach she now strongly encourages others to consider. “Graduating debt-free has been a huge relief. I know nurses who have thousands of dollars in student debt,” she explained. “Save your money, use your time wisely, and remember, status won’t matter in five years.”
Today, she uses her experiences to encourage and mentor nursing students who are just starting out. “I’ve been able to encourage others and help them achieve their goals too. It feels good to give back.”
Macana credits her success not only to her own hard work, but also to the unwavering support from her family and faith. When asked what message she would like to pass along to the donors that made her scholarship possible, she said, “I would like to say thank you so much! You guys have helped me achieve my dream of becoming a nurse and relieved a financial burden in doing so. Thank you so much for helping me fulfill my calling!”
When asked what lessons have carried her through, she is quick to answer: “God’s timing and will is best. Be content with simple things, you’ll get where you want to be, but it takes time and prayer.”
Looking ahead, Macana and her husband, Cameron, are excited for the future, with plans to grow their family. “I want to acknowledge my husband for being my rock through it all, my mom for shaping me, and my daughter for inspiring me to be better. And most importantly, I thank the Lord for guiding every step.”
From student to nurse, mentor, and mother, Macana represents the powerful ripple effect of a single scholarship and the community that believed in her.
