2022 S.U.R.F. Board Grants
S.U.R.F. Board Awarded $7,849 in Grants
Davie County Early College National Honor Society – $700 – to continue the Bundles of Love project in memory of Adrianna Barber. They will buy comforting items and assemble bags for children entering the Dragonfly House Program
Davie County High School Band – $4,474 – for instrument replacement & repair. Davie High Band program does not receive funding from the school, they rely on donations, fundraisers, or grants to purchase items
Davie County Exceptional Children Department – $2,100 – Autism Awareness & enrichment for students. The first part of the project is geared towards helping kids in EC classes. They will assemble “sensory kits” which would include fidget toys, wobble seats, headphones, and stretchy bands to give to all the EC classrooms in the county. The second part of the project focuses on raising awareness about autism for the elementary age students. It can be hard for younger kids to understand autism so they will supply the six elementary schools with a variety of books that can explain autism in a way that children can better understand.
NC Fusion – $575 – TOPSoccer Futures Program – TOPSoccer is a community program that provides activities for physically and mentally challenged kids. On Sundays, kids participate in a “glorified field day.” There are individual activities such as shooting a soccer ball, blowing bubbles, snowball fights, as well as group games. The grant will provide supplies for the games.

2020 S.U.R.F. Board Grants
Foster Care of Davie County – Birthday Gifts – $2,000
This grant will help provide birthday gifts to the children in the Davie County Foster system. This grant was funded by the earnings of S.U.R.F.’s Dodgeball Tournament in November 2019, their 2019 Bed Race winnings, and their grant fund!
Davie County Early College National Honor Society – Bundles of Love – $550
NHS will put together 36 comfort bags for The Dragonfly House to give to children that come in. This project is in memory of Adrianna Barber, who started this project in 2018, and passed away in 2019.
Davie High War Eagle Motorsports – Project Sunburn – $2,500
Students are building a solar powered car for competition. They hope to become the first high school in NC with a solar powered car.
Davie High Hunger Fighters – Stockings for Schools- $3,000
Students will work together to gather school supplies that will be given out right before Christmas break. The recipients will be 500 students identified by the Guidance Counselors at the middle schools and High School. This project has proven successful for many years.
2019 S.U.R.F. Board Grants
Davie County Special Olympics – $1,500 for Back on Track
This project will be used to establish a Special Olympics Track Team to compete in the 2019 State Summer Olympics. The students who wrote the grant have already started working with the team and they have nine students participating!
COGNITION of Davie County, Inc. – $10,000 for Cart for the Makerspace
A total of $10,000 was awarded to fund a mobile cart in the Markerspace at COGNITION Davie, an interactive learning center coming to Mocksville in 2020. The upper level of COGNITION will contain hands-on exhibits and the lower level will contain a makerspace geared toward middle and high school age students. With STEAM focused and industry related activities and programming, COGNITION will enable learning and exploration for all ages.
2018 S.U.R.F. Board Grants
Adrianna Barber -Davie County Early College High School – $1,500 for Bundles of love
Adrianna’s project will provide comforting items for children upon arrival to the Dragonfly House. The group will purchase bags and include items such as snacks, hygiene products, candy, goodies, and index cards with bible verses written on them. The group will also purchase shirts, blankets, play dough crayons and other items to assist in therapy.
Luke Morton – Family Promise of Davie County -$500 for Happy Healthy Kids
Luke’s project is to get the children of Family Promise involved in healthy outdoor activities. Since many of the children don’t have anything to do outside, the group will purchase toys and outdoor play equipment . To promote healthy eating; a garden will also be provided for the Family Promise household as part of this project.
Kayla Roscoe – DC Early College Catalyst: Fuel the Change – $300 for Exam Study Session
Kayla’s project will provide a study space for students to prepare for exams. Since exam time is a stressful time, in addition to giving them a quiet space to collaborate with other, Kayla also wants to encourage the students. The study session for kids to study together and eat will take place after school.
Anna Sloan – Davie High Science Club $800 for Davie High Recycle
Anna’s project is to purchase new lids and can liners for the recycling cans at the school.
Patrick Turner – Davie High Hunger Fighters – $1,600 for Stockings for School
Patrick’s project is to provide school supplies for families and students who may need them in the school systems of North Davie, South Davie, Ellis Middle, and Davie High. The much needed school supplies will be distributed over the holiday to help the students be prepared for the upcoming new year and give them one less thing to worry about while celebrating the holidays.
2017 S.U.R.F. Board Grants
Avery Boudreau – Davie High Hunger Fighters – Award Amount $1,870.00
Avery’s project is Stockings for Schools which will provide 200 stockings full of school supplies to students in need. This project was started in 2013-2014 by previous SURF board members and this year is a continuation of the project.
Luke Morton -Wake Forest Baptist Health Davie Medical Center Volunteers – Award Amount $338.00
Luke’s project is Coloring Entre Las Lineas- A Cool Way To Learn Spanish which will provide coloring sheets and crayons to entertain and educate children while they are in the Wake Forest Baptist Health Davie Medical Center Emergency Room waiting area. The sheets have directions written in both English and Spanish.
Samantha Smith – Family Promise of Davie County – Award Amount $2,928.10
Samantha’s project is Family Promise Children’s Bedding which will provide linens and bedding for the children who will be a part of this new program to combat homelessness.
Jacob Juarez – Davie County High School STEM students – Award Amount $ 1,125.00
Jacob’s project is Birthday in a Box which will reach families in need by bringing joy to youth through the fun of a birthday party. Some families are not fortunate enough to have birthday parties or even a cake for their children. This project helps those families give their child a birthday to remember.

2016 S.U.R.F. Board Grants
The Davie Community Foundation SURF Board awarded $12,212 in Grants for youth led projects to benefit the youth and children in Davie County.
SURF defines philanthropy with 3 T’s; giving Time, Talent and Treasure to make the community better.
“I am super proud of all of their hard work to raise the money, and their discernment as they heard grant requests, and made their decisions. I can’t wait to see the results from the completed projects.” said SURF Advisor Tami Daniel.
The following awards were made for 2016:
Laura Cain – Davie High Hunger Fighters – Award Amount $1,549
Laura’s project is Stockings for Schools which will provide 200 stockings filled with school supplies to the low income students at the high school and the three middle schools. This is the fourth year of this successful project. Laura hopes to expand this project into the elementary schools in the future.
Claire Devereaux – Davie High National Honor Society – Award Amount $800
Claire’s project is to put the Davie High Recycling Program back into place for the EC Students at the high school, so they can have their daily job back that was lost due to budget cuts. She will be purchasing bins for all of the buildings as well as creating signs and providing instruction for student and faculty on their part of making the program successful.
Clayton Foster – Bethlehen UMC Youth Group – Award Amount $3,000
Clayton’s project is for a Bike Safety Day at the church for the children that live in a nearby mobile home park. They plan to give bike, helmets,and prepare a safety course for training for the children. They also want to introduce the children and their parents to local firefighters and law enforcement to introduce them as their friends and people they can count on. (The group originally requested $4,000, but SURF feels they can accomplish their goals with less.)
Molly Hartness – Davie Hair Drive – Award Amount $700
Molly is organizing a county wide hair drive to gather ponytails to make wigs for cancer patients through Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Participation in this event has a direct impact on the girls of Davie County who serve others by donating their hair, as well as raising awareness for the cause.
Ashton Mann – Smart Start of Davie County – Award Amount $1,000
Ashton and Anna Jones requested money to purchase a computer for Smart Start’s Early Resource Center. The computer will be used by Ashton and Anna to implement “Resource Mate,” a program to bar code and label all of the educational kits and materials that are available for local preschool families to check out. This will make the system much for efficient and user friendly. Ashton and Anna are volunteering their time this summer to set the program up, and educate the families on how to use it.
Julia Vaughan-Jones – Davie High National Honor Society – Award Amount $2,045
Julia’s project is Summer Bags for the Homeless. This is the second year for this project. They plan to provide 125 bags filled with toiletry items and age appropriate activities to entertain the homeless students over the summer. They also want to provide connections with free programs that are available to the students during the summer.
Laurel Hecht – The STEM Juniors – Award Amount $2,174
The STEM Juniors are a group of eleventh grade STEM students at Davie County High School. They plan to purchase six gymnastics mats for Mocksville Elementary. The addition of new gymnastics mats to the Mocksville Elementary gymnasium will encourage students to maintain healthy lifestyles, while continuing the progress made by the Healthy, Fit and Strong program already implemented at the school.
Callie Wisecarver – Girl Scout Troop 2147 – Award Amount $944
Callie and her Girl Scout Troop are creating Personal Care Bags for the abused children at the Dragonfly House. The bags will contain a comfort toy, toiletries, school supplies, snacks, some basic clothing items, etc.

2015 S.U.R.F. Board Grants
Bike Safety Project – Garrett Penley and Boy Scout Troop 575 were awarded $1,000 to host a Bike Safety Day at Rich Park in April. The first twenty-five students to sign up will receive a coupon for a free bike helmet. The day will include instruction on the proper use and care of your bicycle, as well as how to mountain bike.
DHS Science Preparedness – Katelyn Sammons, Grace Cain and the Science Olympiad Team at Davie High were awarded $985 to pay for the fee to compete on the State level, and to host a Science Camp for middle school students this summer.
Hopping for Hope – Austin Lowery and Elaina Burr were awarded $585 to create Easter Baskets for the children at the Dragonfly House. These baskets will provide comfort, joy, and hope to children who have not experienced much joy or hope in their lives.
Summer Bags for Homeless – Allison Staley and the DHS National Honor Society were awarded $1,500 to create Summer Bags for the Homeless Students in Davie County. There are currently 105 students classified as homeless. The brightly colored bags will contain hygiene products and well as some toys and activities to entertain these students during the summer.
Davie Hair Drive – Molly Hartness, Grace Nixon, and the DHS Junior Civitans were awarded $300 for the 2015 Hair Drive to be held at Davie High on May 12th. The hair drive will collect eight inches or more of hair from participants to create wigs for cancer patients.
Stockings for School – Grace Cain and the Davie Hunger Fighters were awarded $1,560 to create stockings filled with school supplies for Middle School and High School Students in Davie County. This is the third year that this project has been funded, and local Guidance Counselors say that it makes a huge difference for these students.
2014 S.U.R.F. Board Grants
Davie High STEM Ambassadors – Birthdays in a Box – $960: Funds will be used to purchase all of the supplies needed to hold a child’s birthday party. Supplies will be assembled in a decorated box and delivered to A Storehouse for Jesus for distribution to 50 needy families with children who have upcoming birthdays. Birthday boxes will include cake mix, icing, Kool-Aid mix, cups, plates, napkins, utensils, balloons, birthday banner, bubbles, and party favors.
Davie High Hunger Fighters – Stockings for School – $1,650: Funds will provide school supplies in Christmas stockings to students at Davie High, Ellis Middle, North Davie Middle, and South Davie Middle Schools. The stockings are intended to replenish school supplies for needy students for the second semester. Stockings will be distributed through the Hunger Fighters and Bookbags for Hope programs in the middle and high schools. Project organizers plan to pack 178 stockings for distribution in December 2014.
2013 S.U.R.F. Board Grants
Davie County 4-H – Clover Club – $500: Funds will purchase of puppet show supplies for the club to provide entertaining and educational puppet shows for pre-school and elementary students.
Davie County 4-H – Wardrobe Warriors – $1,000: Funds will purchase stylish teen clothes that will be donated to A Storehouse for Jesus to be distributed specifically to teens in need in the community. This project aims to help teens in need gain confidence and fit in with their peers.
Davie High Hunger Fighters – Stockings for School – $500: Funds will purchase school supplies to be distributed through the Hunger Fighters program. This new program aims to help replenish school supplies for Davie High students in need mid-way through the year.
Davie High Odyssey of the Mind – $2,000: Funds went to the Davie High team’s registration fees for the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals competition, which the team advanced to after winning at the state level. In May at Michigan State University, the DHS team finished 7th in the world competition!
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Members of the DHS team apply their creative skills to solve a problem, build several structures, then incorporate said structures into a short skit that tells a meaningful story.

2012 S.U.R.F Board Grants reports:
Davie High Hunger Fighters – $4,000
Provided daily meals for 32 Davie High students for the summer. Food was packaged by the students and confidentially delivered by volunteer teachers.
