A Storehouse for Jesus received $9,150 for their Feeding the Hungry initiative. A Storehouse for Jesus supplies food to low-income, eligible residents of Davie County through purchased and donated food. A Storehouse for Jesus is a volunteer ministry hoping to help alleviate hunger and hunger insecurity in our community. They also provide donated clothing, hygienic supplies, household items and toys to underserved residents. This grant money will allow the Storehouse to feed approximately 1,200 individuals.
The Advocacy Center of Davie County was granted $10,000 towards assisting Davie County residents in times of crises. The center’s mission is to work together with local churches and agencies to help individuals and families temporarily in need of a helping hand. They provide one-time financial assistance to qualifying Davie residents to help them avoid the threat of homelessness. Their grant will be applied towards housing and utility assistance, emergency car repairs as well as budgeting classes for the low-income members of the community.
COGNITION of Davie, Inc. received a check for $20,000 for their year 4 of 4 capacity building of their organization. COGNITION is an Interactive Children’s Museum and Makerspace in downtown Mocksville. COGNITION promotes exploration, education, and innovation in Davie County and surrounding communities. They accomplish it by creating opportunities for people of all ages to play, learn, and grow.
COGNITION also received a check for $7,982 for Exhibit Area Updates to keep the space fresh and interesting for visitors.
The Cooleemee Historical Association received $5,000 which will contribute to their new ADA Compliant Handicap/Wheelchair Ramp providing access into The Zachary House. The Zachary House houses both the Textile Heritage Museum and the Cooleemee Town Hall. The current ramp was installed in approximately 1994 and is constructed of wood. The new, improved ramp will be replaced by commercial aluminum and will ensure all can enter safely.
Davie High School Band Boosters received a check for $26,959 for 52 wind ensemble students to attend the President’s Cup National Concert Band Invitational in Washington D.C. This grant provides a rare opportunity for students to learn from and interact with premier music professionals of the US Army, both retired and active duty during a 4-day event. The Davie County High School Band will perform on-stage featuring an all-state level piece selected by the wind ensemble.
Davie County Schools received a grant for $23,000 for forty educators to attend the Foundations of Math training during the 2024-2025 school year. The goal of this project is to increase kindergarten through twelfth grade teachers’ mathematics content knowledge. Funds will be used to cover substitute teachers for the participants’ classrooms during the five days of training.
Family Promise of Davie was awarded $16,000 to go towards their Family Center and Shelter. Family Promise is a crisis intervention zone serving local families with minor children who are at-risk or already homeless. Families in the shelter program have 24/7 access to shelter and receive individualized case management. Their goal is to provide crisis assistance while setting families up for long-term stability.
Habitat for Humanity of Davie County was awarded $20,000 for their New Construction Build. Habitat for Humanity seeks to promote self-reliance through home ownership, affirm the dignity of family and create sustainable communities. Habitat Davie provides opportunities for first time home buyers to own a home that is affordable and reliable. Through home ownership, families are able to build equity and financial security for future generations to come. The grant money will go towards a new home for a Davie County resident.
The Heritage Alliance Project received a check of $5,000 that will aid with their start-up costs for the new organization. The Heritage Alliance Project seeks to preserve the East Depot/Mill Street community’s history, address the area and advocate for the safety of the residents.
Make-A-Wish Central and Western NC was granted $7,500 for A Wish for a Davie County Child. Make-A-Wish creates life changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight their illness. This grant money will go towards helping make a critically ill Davie County child’s wish come true.
North Davie Middle School received a grant of $1,010 for their Sources of Strength program. Sources of Strength is a nationally recognized, strength-based suicide prevention program. The program utilizes “Social Network Theory” to recruit diverse and influential students known as Peer Leaders to model positive behaviors such as help-seeking, healthy coping, and identifying trusted adults. Sources of Strength partners these influential Peer Leaders with caring, connected, and positive Adult Advisors to instigate a public health initiative. This grant money will allow the purchase of Peer Leader Guides and materials used towards messaging campaigns that are specifically targeted to the distressed youth.
RiverPark at Cooleemee Falls (locally known as “The Bullhole”) was granted $8,653 for RiverPark Access Amenities. The new amenities will include picnic tables, grills, and hot ash receptacles. The new additions will help accommodate the thriving park voted on Google Analytics as #1 for “time well spent” in Davie and Rowan counties.
Smart Start of Davie County received a grant of $10,330 to be applied towards their Kaleidoscope Play with a Purpose program. Attendees will be able to gather for a “free play” and exploration time in their outdoor learning environment that features a sensory wall and opportunities to learn about nature. The program also includes story time, music and movement, arts and crafts and snack time. Caregivers are supplied with resources and information on how to make every moment a learning opportunity with their children, so a solid foundation is being laid early on.
William R. Davie Elementary was awarded $2,040 for Dr. Kellee Church’s classes to be able to experience the World Music Drumming Curriculum with the purchase of 6 reno drums. The reno drums will be utilized in teaching the students rhythm and how to improvise. They will also aid in teaching the students about syncopation, meter, improvisation and how to maintain a steady beat.
