Brooke Hess

When we hear Greensboro, our first thought is a city in North Carolina not too far from Davie County, but for scholarship recipient Brooke Hess, Greensboro is now the rural town in Alabama that she calls home. After high school, Brooke, a Rotary Club of Mocksville scholarship recipient, attended UNC Chapel Hill where she studied Global Health and Environment with a minor in Chemistry. She was also on a Pre-Med track.

Brooke’s college career was sprinkled with impressive academic accomplishments, admirable community service, and a study abroad experience to Chile. She was an Organic Chemistry tutor, a Transportation Intern for the Orange County Department of Aging, and a Counselor with Camp Kesem, a program for school aged children who have been affected by a parent’s cancer diagnosis. Brooke was also involved with the Carolina Pediatric Attention Love and Support (CPALS) where she worked with patients in the Pediatric Oncology Center at UNC Cancer Hospital and planned retreats for the patients and their families.

Her passion for people, sparked by her college experiences, led to her current role as a Senior Community Health Fellow for Project Horseshoe Farm, a grassroots non-profit organization providing innovative programs for adults and children, including community center programs, health partner programs, after school programs, and an Enhanced Independent Living facility. During this fellowship, Brooke is improving the quality of life for many, building the strength of multiple communities, and training future service leaders. After a year in Greensboro, she is piloting a second location for the organization in Marion, Alabama.

Living in a small town has reminded Brooke of her upbringing in Davie County and rekindled her love for a close knit community. Because of this, she hopes to attend medical school and become a Primary Care Physician in a rural community. When not working, Brooke enjoys traveling, camping, hiking, backpacking, and running. She ran her first marathon last spring! We are proud to have been able to support Brooke as she pursues her dreams.
