Cancer Services, Inc. | Survivorship Support and Wellness for Davie County will provide “Chemo Care Kits” for 100 Davie County Residents in active treatment, or within 6 months of treatment. These kit supplies are survivor-inspired and can help with the most common discomforts associated with chemotherapy and cancer treatment. Also, a hands-on Cooking Program promoting healthy eating that is essential during and after treatment will be provided twice during the year. | $4,000 |
DC Economic Development Commission | The Park at Lake Louise Phase 1 will safely connect the public to a passive park experience as walking and biking trails are completed and signage installed. Three fitness spots will be created along the trail for those who choose a more challenging workout. Regular exercise and play are major keys to the prevention and treatment of lifestyle related illnesses. | $15,000 |
DC Recreation and Parks | Davie County Recreation and Parks is set to open their first Community Park for Davie County residents and surrounding counties in the spring of 2020. A key feature in the amenities of the park will be the largest Vortex Splashpad in North Carolina. With two Splash Pad Aquatic Wheelchairs individuals who would, under normal circumstances, be unable to participate in the action of aquatic summer play will no longer be limited by their wheelchairs’ ability to maneuver around wet areas. | $5,600 |
Smart Start | The Be Active Kids Initiative suggests that physical activity is on the decline across the state with North Carolina having the 23rd highest childhood obesity rate in the nation. Presenting a hands-on activity to families in an exciting and interactive environment such as KidsFest followed by equipping parents with the Be Active Kids Take Home Activity Kits will allow families to not only see the benefits of active play but also feel the positive impact of living an active life. Kits will help families implement high-quality physical activity at home. | $2,400 |
South Davie Middle School | As obesity becomes an increasingly urgent issue in the country, "Rethink Your Drink" will encourage the South Davie Middle School student body to make healthy choices. Ensuring that students have access to safe, free drinking water throughout the school gives them a healthy alternative to sugar sweetened beverages before, during, and after school. Two Water Bottle Filling Stations will be installed that function as normal fountains, but also include a spot for hands-free water bottle filling. The installation will coincide with a reusable water bottle giveaway for the SDMS student body. | $4,319 |
