Big Buddy Program
Over 60 children at William R. Davie and Mocksville Elementary school after-school sites (through YMCA) received training on Financial Literacy. The training focused on “taxes” and how they work.
“The students initial response when they heard we were going to discuss taxes was not so positive. We were greeted with “ewwwww.” The worksheets and activity that included the candy smarties soon grasped their attention and the students were responsive in answering questions. The students, ages 7-10 were more knowledgeable about taxes and what their parents pay taxes for by the time the training was complete.” said Jenna Hendricks, Program Manager. During the training, the students had “smarties” and had to pay taxes with their smarties while learning the different types of taxes.
Big Brothers Big Sisters will be hosting a Field Day for all YMCA Summer Camp participants that include Big and Little Buddies on June 29th. This event will include physical activity, games, and door prizes and will help promote the Healthy Davie Initiative!
This is an example of how community donations are working through the Davie Community Foundation in the form of community grants. Every dollar donated is added to the fund it is designated for. You can be part of the solution by donating to the Community Impact Fund at any time, in any amount. Your gifts make projects like this possible!
