The following organizations received Community Fund Grants for their projects in 2016. In total, $126,800 was awarded from endowment funds to make a difference!
Big Brothers Big Sisters – $9,500
Big Buddy Program: Operating at eight after school sites in Davie county, this program matches children from single parent homes with high school, college, and adult buddies for weekly activities.
Cooleemee Elementary School $5,000
Reluctant Reader Outreach: To reach reluctant readers, which includes students reading below grade level and students reading at grade level who are not avid readers, this project will expand and update high interest/low reading level books in the Cooleemee library. This is a long-term project, but the funding this year would be used solely to purchase books that would interest reluctant leaders.

SOAR Summer Camp: The Summer Reading program which has been very beneficial in supporting student growth for the past several years. Data shows students are weak with vocabulary, comprehension and written expression. SOAR 2016 will focus on developing these skills and encouraging the love of learning. The themes will revolve around fairy tales, consumer math, the universe, and animals.

Kinder Camp: Rising Kindergarten students will participate in activities to help them become acclimated with the school environment, daily routines and classroom technology to prepare them for successful entry into Kindergarten.
Cornatzer Elementary School $10,500
Camp AU-Some: Summer camp sessions for children with Autism spectrum disorders. This camp will allow students (K-12) to receive therapy and instruction in a structured environment, as well as offer support to family members. In its eighth year, the camp is projected to serve 35-40 students “Under the Big Top.”
Cornatzer Elementary School $7,600
Hands-on Minds Together: A summer camp to allow youth to engage in hands-on activities to maintain reading, math, science, and technology skills. The theme will be an adapted version of the “Color Me Healthy” curriculum. Students will study nutrition, create menus, measure ingredients, cook, and learn healthy eating habits.

Kinder Camp: Rising Kindergarten students will participate in activities to help them become acclimated with the school environment, daily routines and classroom technology to prepare them for successful entry into Kindergarten.
Sheriff’s Office $3,500.00
D.A.R.E. Leadership Camp: A camp for rising 6th graders with leadership potential to be teamed with at risk youth, both of whom completed the DARE program. They will travel 1 week through the NC and TN mountains to develop positive role models, improve leadership qualities, strengthen friendships and build self-esteem.
Davie County Schools $15,000
STEM Pipeline Summer Camp: A two week summer academy for 30 rising 7th grade students. The camp will promote interest and performance in STEM related studies leading into high school science and math. The students engage in problem-based learning, design challenges, digital media presentations, and two relevant field trips to Discovery Place and NASCAR Hall of Fame and Museum.
Davie Family YMCA $7,500
Healthy Fit & Strong: A youth obesity prevention program in Davie County focused on Second Grade. Students will meet for 3 months, 2 times a week at recess and 1 time at the YMCA. Physical education and nutrition are the focuses. Parents receive two nutrition education sessions at the YMCA taught by a registered dietitian.
Just HOPE, Inc. $1,500
Family Day Center: Provides resources and services to address inadequate housing and lack of transportation in Davie County. These services include financial literacy, life skills training, mobile food and toiletry pantry, job search and resume building training, on-site laundry, and others for Davie County’s homeless population.
Mocksville Elementary School $3,000
Kinder Camp: Rising Kindergarten students will participate in activities to help them become acclimated with the school environment, daily routines and classroom technology to prepare them for successful entry into Kindergarten.

“Discovery Island” STEM Camp: A summer “STEM” camp for rising 1st thru 5th graders. Twelve sessions with emphasis on energy, architecture, engineering, food science, and environmental sciences with literacy, math, and technology skills integrated throughout the entire camp. Specific topics this year will include renewable energy sources, building design and engineering, force and motion, and simple machines.
Pinebrook Elementary School $5,500
PRIDE Academy: A reading and math camp for rising 1st and 2nd graders. The theme will be “Summer Olympics”. Students will complete reading and math activities centered around sports, fitness, athletes, and South America. The camp will provide guest speakers on Brazil and/or sports fitness. Students set individual academic goals at the beginning of the camp.

Shady Grove Elementary School $5,000
PAWS Summer Reading Camps: A 2-week summer camp for rising 1st-3rd graders who demonstrate difficulty in reading. The theme, “Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds”, will promote literacy and healthy lifestyle choices.

Smart Start of Davie County $4,000
Parents as Teachers: A national program that provides vital parenting information, through one-on-one time with a certified educator, in the home. Grant will support continued work with families in the program.
William R. Davie Elementary School $9,850
Summer Of Fun Learning Academy: A summer reading/math enrichment academy to help prevent the summer learning loss and prepare students for the upcoming school year. This year’s theme is “Camp WRD!”, and will allow teachers to create academic and exercise lesson plans around camping activities.
