2016 Night at the Oscars

The stars of the evening were brightly shining April 26th as Davie Community Foundation awarded 83 scholarships to 53 students in the class of 2016.  High school seniors from across Davie County gathered with their families and foundation donors at the Brock Performing Arts Center, as more than $107,000 of scholarships were awarded.
Scholarship Recipients 2016 Group

Hosts for the evening were Jane Simpson, Foundation President and CEO, and George Webb, Foundation Chairman.  They introduced one by one Foundation Board members, who described the different “Oscar Scholarships”. Each presentation ended with the opening of an envelope announcing “the Scholarship Oscar goes to…” bringing about a great deal of surprise and excitement as names were read and trophies presented.

“The Oscar theme is a tradition now,” said George Webb. “The students love it and our donors enjoyed the opportunity to talk with the high school recipients of their named scholarships. It has turned out to be a great way to honor our young people and give them the opportunity to meet and thank the donors.” Scholarship Recipients

This was by far the most competitive group of students applying, as scholarship committees selected from 144 applicants.  Now in its twenty-eighth year, the Davie Community Foundation has awarded more than $630,000 in scholarship dollars to residents of Davie County. Sixty-two endowed scholarships are currently administered by the Foundation, with 9 first-time scholarships being awarded this year. In addition to the High School recipients awarded at the Oscars, eighteen College students also received awards this year.  Scholarships have a variety of criteria and focuses set by the donors who establish them.

It was a wonderfully exciting evening for everyone!  Sponsors for the evening were:

BB&T     Donald Bowles CPA     Cathy and Grady McClamrock, Jr.     Bill and Marie Steed

Wendy Horne & Davie Life Magazine     James and Teresa Bumgarner

Special thanks go to the Foundation’s SURF Board Youth Grantmakers, as they welcomed guests and One Shot Photography for taking photos.
