Ever wonder how you would entertain your children if you were living in a motel room for the summer? The SURF Board is paying for one idea with the money they raised at this year’s POPSICLE 5K.
The Students Understanding Real Futures Board Youth Grantmakers, organized under the Davie Community Foundation, will demonstrate what their name is all about on Monday, April 11th at 7:00 pm. SURF will act like an adult board as they hand out big checks for eight youth-led projects totaling $10,038!
SURF raised the money they will award through their fundraising event, the POPSICLE 5K, held in February of this year. SURF raised more than $10,000 and will grant it to other youth for projects that make a difference in Davie County.
Each of the projects was planned by young people with an adult advisor. Applications were submitted online, thanks to an online application set up by Debbie Koontz at the Foundation. A young person from each project then made a presentation to the SURF Board. Board members were able to ask questions about the project details, budgets, and make suggestions. All of the presenters were obviously nervous to be in front of twenty of their peers, but they did a wonderful job of explaining the details and purposes of their projects.
“We hope the community will join SURF at the Library on April 11th,” said SURF Advisor Tami Daniel. “SURF did a great job of making decisions about spending the money they raised and the youth applying for their year’s profits did a wonderful job of making their presentations. I think adults will be very impressed by these young people and will be proud of the many ways they are using their money to make good things happen.”
