As 2015 ended, the Foundation looked to recipients of community grants for reports about the use of their money along with any stories of success relating to the grant. Smart Start of Davie County received $4,000 in 2015 to pay for home visits by the Parent Educator as part of the Parents as Teachers Program.
Grant money paid for an additional 133 hours for visits, but it was the stories from those visits that caught our attention. It is easy to see how community grants are making a positive difference in Davie County when we hear about the people whose lives are being changed one step at a time!
Here’s a sampling to prove our point:
- The Parent Educator encouraged one mom to to apply for scholarship money from Davie Business Women to pay for books for college. Both the mom and the Parent Educator attended a meeting to speak and accept the award. Mom will finish her degree in Spring 2016.
- One mom got out of a domestic violence situation. She obtained housing through resources provided by the Parent Educator.
- One mother of five went back to school for a nursing degree. The family was below the poverty level but is doing much better after setting family goals and working with the Parent Educator.
- With guidance from the Parent Educator, a single mom went back to school with online classes for medical receptionists. She obtained housing for herself and her children and can now work on her degree from home.
These are simple examples of ways community donations are working through the Davie Community Foundation in the form of community grants. Every dollar donated is added to the fund it is designated for. You can be part of the solution by donating to the Community Impact Fund at any time, in any amount. Your gifts make stories like this possible!
