February 2012
- The first ever Popsicle 5k Run took place on February 4th and it was a huge success! Over 200 people were involved to make this event an extraordinary fundraiser; SURF raised over $5,000 for grantmaking!
- SURF also met this month to de-brief the race and think of ways to improve it next year. Next year’s date has been set for February 2, 2013.
January 2012
- SURF met at the beginning of January to talk about food sponsors and goody bag items for the Popsicle 5k Run. At the end of the month, the Board met at Rich Park to talk about race day logistics and went to the Davie Community Foundation office to pack 200 goody bags for the runners!
December 2011
- The December meeting consisted of more Popsicle Run planning! The board discussed several important topics, specifically marketing and sponsors. The main goal for this month is to get sponsorships from businesses to cover the expenses for the race.
- Registration is now open for the race! Visit SURF’s main page for more information.
November 2011
- A few details have been finalized for the SURF 5k Fundraiser. The “Popsicle Run” will be held on Saturday, February 4th, 2012 at 9:00am. Cost for pre-registration will be $20 and the cost will increase to $25 beginning February 1st. The race will begin and end at Rich Park in Mocksville.
- At the meeting, some ideas were discussed for sponsorship levels and potential sponsors.
- This month, SURF will be actively distributing the RFP by speaking to various clubs and groups that may be interested in grants for projects.
October 2011
- The two main topics on the agenda for October were RFP finalization and fundraising. First, the board reviewed last year’s RFP and made changes to get it ready for the 2011-2012 year. Board members discussed several places to put the RFP and signed up to deliver it around the community. Jane reminded SURF of the importance of a personal contact when delivering the RFP; it is best to speak directly to people or groups/clubs.
- Next, fundraising was discussed. The board voted on planning a 5k race this year to take the place of the ping-pong tournament. This is a new and exciting venture for SURF! The following committees were formed to begin the planning process: sponsors, logistics, publicity, food, incentive, and volunteers. The 5k will most likely take place in early February.
September 2011
- SURF met for their first official meeting of the year on September 6th. Meridith Cheek, SURF advisor, reviewed the August retreat and the mission & code. Jane Simpson, Davie Community Foundation president, explained philanthropy and how it relates to the SURF board. She reminded the board that each of them is a philanthropist when they give of their time, talent, and treasure.
- Ellie Carter, SURF board president, explained the RFP (Request for Proposals) for new members. This year’s RFP will be finalized at the next meeting. Ellie also led a discussion on fundraising ideas for this year; many board members were excited about this and committees were formed to discuss certain ideas in further detail to present at the next meeting.

- The board heard an update on the recipients of last year’s grants. Several of the projects are yet to be completed and others are already underway.
- Teams were formed for Catchphrase and these teams will compete at each meeting throughout the year! Score: Team 2 = 2 pts, Team 1 = 1pt.
