Gifts Made in Honor/Memory Are a Lasting Tribute

Sam Hall and his son, Evan.

The Samuel P. Hall Memorial Scholarship was recently opened as a parents’ gift in memory of the son they lost unexpectedly.

Samuel P. Hall, Sam, left us much too soon. He had a wonderful wife and son, a terrific family, and an unmatched personality. Many people knew him by his “laid back” disposition and appreciated his engaging conversation. Put shortly, he was the last person you would expect to die at the age of 50. Thanks to the generosity and love of his parents, Sam Hall’s legacy will forever remain in Davie County helping young people with their educational pursuits. Click here to read the full story.

If you wish to give to the fund, please send a check made payable to Davie Community Foundation with Samuel P. Hall in the memo. Don’t forget that you may make a gift in honor or memory of a loved one to this fund or any other, at any time, in any amount.

A gift in honor or memory of a loved one is a gift that not only makes a difference in our community, but also shows an individual that you care. Many donors make a gift annually in honor of a family member’s birthday. Others give in memory of a friend they have lost. An acknowledgement card will be sent to either the person (if the gift is in honor) or a close family member (if it is in memory). These types of gifts are a lasting tribute for someone that you care about.

Please call the office at (336) 753-6903 if you have any questions about gifts in honor or memory.

$39,500 to Benefit Davie County Children This Summer

A wide majority of the Youth & Literacy grants Davie Community Foundation awarded in April are being used directly for summer programs. Summer reading camps or other programs are taking place through Coolemee Elementary, Cornatzer Elementary, Mocksville Elementary, North Davie Middle School, South Davie Middle School, and William R. Davie Elementary during June and July this year.

Studies show that students, especially those who are low income or otherwise at-risk, experience learning loss during the summer months. Many spend their days at home without books or other educational tools. Research shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of summer vacation (taken from “Primer on Summer Learning Loss“). Engaging their minds through summer camps is an effective (and fun!) way to lessen the detrimental effects summer vacation can have.

With the support of a generous community, Davie Community Foundation was able to award a substantial amount of money to help fund camps in Davie County this year. Your dollars are making a lasting impact on children!

Unrestricted funds are the main source of the funding for these grants along with the support of Donor Advised fund holders. To learn more about Unrestricted funds and Donor Advised funds, please visit the Funds page or call Jane Simpson today at 336-753-6903. We would love to help you connect with a cause you care about!

A Fun and Successful Sounds of Summer 2011!

Sounds of Summer 2011 may have been the best yet! The Davie Community Foundation celebrated a night of community on June 3rd at Childress Vineyards with almost 400 people.

“We were blessed with the prettiest evening we have had,” said Jane Simpson, Foundation president. “The temperature was cooler and you could really feel the difference with the lower humidity. It seemed to lift everyone’s spirits to have a break from the oppressive heat of recent weeks.”

The crowd enjoyed the variety of food prepared by Tricia’s Catering ranging from filet mignon, salmon, fresh shrimp, mini crab cakes, and chicken skewers to fresh fruits and cheeses to a variety of pastas. It was all delicious! To cool guests down from the inside out, E & N Vineyards provided grape and peach slushes and Tricia’s brought the ice cream. No palette was left dissatisfied.

The silent and live auctions featured a variety of items for those who enjoy a little friendly competition. A week on Bald Head Island drew the highest bid in the silent auction while the live auction sold a 2012 Honda Civic.

Guests were given a special opportunity during the live auction to hear from SURF Board president, Ellie Carter. Ellie briefly explained the board and discussed her favorite grant. Auctioneer Kyle Swicegood along with emcee Austin Caviness gave bidders the opportunity to add $100 to the SURF Board grant dollars for the coming year. Twenty six guests responded to empower these young people to participate in philanthropy! “I was very surprised by the response,” said Ellie Carter. “People were so generous and supportive. Even Austin Caviness added to our fund. It was very exciting!”

Band of Oz did a great job of getting people out of their seats and onto the dance floor. Finding a space to move was a challenge as the evening progressed. The Asheville Hoops Troupe surprised the crowd with their hula hoop presentation. The lighted hoops moving to the rhythm of the band’s beat was a stunning sight to see!

“All of this with the beautiful backdrop of Childress Vineyards,” said Jane Simpson. “You could feel the energy and the enjoyment in the crowd. It was invigorating. The generosity of the people in attendance was inspiring as they helped the community by giving to the Foundation and helped our young people through the SURF Board. The one thing that remains so difficult to do is make announcements in such a large outdoor space. We want to thank everyone who made the evening a success: our sponsors; board of directors; office manager Meridith Cheek; the auction committee made up of Joan Carter, Jane Brookshire, Ann Dyson, and PJ & Katie Guerra; One Shot Photography for all the photos from the evening;  auctioneer Kyle Swicegood; and emcee Austin Caviness – Everyone who worked together to make it an extra special evening!”

Sounds of Summer 2012 has been set for Friday, June 1, 2012. The Foundation is looking forward to bringing its celebration of community back to Davie County. The event will be held at the beautiful new WinMock at Kinderton. Mark your calendars now, a sellout is expected!

Challenge Accepted – Challenge Met!!!

Davie Community Foundation accepted a challenge from Reynolds American Foundation to raise $50,000 for the Children’s Reading Fund to receive a $25,000 match from Reynolds. During the last quarter of 2010, Davie Community Foundation worked to complete the challenge and raise the required $50,000.  On December 16, 2010, the challenge was met!

The Mocksville Woman’s Club and Noah Reynolds, great grandson of R.J. Reynolds, made gifts to put the challenge “over the top”. “We were thrilled to reach the $50,000 goal before Christmas,” said Jane Simpson, Davie Community Foundation President. “We had almost 100 gifts from community members all around the county who wanted to help us reach our goal. The benefactor of the donations and the $25,000 match from Reynolds American will be our children!”

The Children’s Reading Fund at Davie Community Foundation is earmarked for summer reading camps at the schools and other reading projects. The fund supports projects that assist children who are below grade level in reading. “Giving a child the gift of reading is a gift that will change their lives. If you are a successful reader, you can do anything you put your mind to. All of Davie’s children should have that opportunity,” said Simpson.

Gifts in any amount will continue to be accepted for the Children’s Reading Fund throughout the next year; however they will not be matched by Reynolds American Foundation. Whether matched or not, every gift supports a Davie child who needs help with reading. Anyone interested in additional information or in making a gift should contact the Davie Community Foundation, PO Box 546, 194 Wilkesboro Street, Mocksville, NC 27028, 336-753-6903, info@daviefoundation.org. You too can change the life of a child!

Pearls Marketing Committee Busts a Move

On November 18, over 50 women gathered for the first annual Pearls of Empowerment luncheon. At this meeting, almost $19,000 was awarded to to six non-profit organizations that serve women and children in Davie County! Click here to see the latest Pearls newsletter detailing the grants.

Each Pearls committee performed a short commercial at the event to raise awareness about their group. Click the following link to see how the Marketing Committee kept the crowd entertained with a rap, complete with over-sized jerseys and beatboxing.  Marketing Rap

Davie Community Foundation is investing in Davie County children!

Davie Community Foundation must raise $50,000 for the Children’s Reading Fund by December 31st to receive a $25,000 match from Reynolds American Foundation. Currently, we have raised over $40,000 and we need your help! Please make your tax deductible donation today to change the life of a child!

Summer Reading Camps Help Students Start the New School Year Right!
During the summer months, more than 250 children attended reading camps supported by the Foundation. A summer reading camp was held at Cooleemee, Cornatzer, Mocksville, Pinebrook, Shady Grove, and William R. Davie Elementary Schools. The camps were designed to help students reading below grade level. Although each school’s camp was arranged differently, they all made summer learning fun and offered children in attendance the opportunity for small group and/or individual attention. School staff is hopeful that the regression usually experienced by these students is eliminated by spending time reading over the summer. They should have arrived for the first day of school excited and ready to learn new things!

The Community Foundation believes all Davie County children need to be successful readers. We have chosen to invest unrestricted dollars in grants for youth and literacy projects, and we believe the summer camps to be a prudent literacy investment. Thankfully, the Reynolds American Foundation agrees!

Reynolds American “Challenge Grant” Opportunity
Reynolds American approved a challenge grant to Davie Community Foundation for 2010. The Foundation must raise $50,000 to receive a $25,000 match from Reynolds. The goal is to add $15,000 per year for five years to the grant dollars available for summer reading camps.

“Turn on the Light” for Reading!
We need your help! We calculated the average cost per student to attend a summer reading camp to be approximately $100. An addition of $75,000 to the Children’s Reading Fund equates to 750 children who could have the opportunity to receive help during the five years and hopefully “turn on the light” with reading.

How to Give a Gift That Bears Lasting Dividends
Please consider making your tax deductible donation today to give ten children, five children, or even one child the gift of reading.  It is a gift that can change their lives! The attached brochure summarizes this year’s summer reading camps. Please take a look and consider your personal investment in Davie County children. Remember, every dollar that you invest becomes $1.50 thanks to the generosity of Reynolds American Foundation. In times such as these, a 50% return on investment is not easy to secure. Turning that kind of return into dollars working for children is an investment we all should be part of.
