2010: Get Your Motor Running and Ride Into the New Decade!

Get your motor running and ride into the new decade! That was the message of the Davie Community Foundation Scholarship Dinner in May. The dinner was hosted for students who received scholarships administered by the Foundation, the scholars’ families, and the donors and selection committees.

Foundation Chairwoman Marlene Shamel welcomed the guests telling them to get ready for the new ride they were about to take. “It should be a wonderful adventure.” Following the “Blessing of the Riders” by Phil Fuller, guests enjoyed dinner from the “Roadhouse Grill” served by Foundation Board members Phil Fuller, Bryant Smith, Frank Bahnson, and Bill Steed – all dressed in their Harley gear.

After dinner, guests heard from Mark Cox, a managing partner of Crossroads Harley Davidson in Wilkesboro.  Mark told guests his ride had been “mostly in the fast lane” thus far. “Life can take you down many paths! But, by staying focused on your Passion, you will grow and learn along the way and continue to work toward your own Road to Success!” Mark concluded his remarks by challenging the students to “develop your own Personal Mission Statement. Mine is…To Pursue Excellence! That always drives me to do my best to achieve the next level!”

Scholars were recognized by Foundation Board members Elizabeth Sparks, Grady McClamrock, and Gladys Scott; each sharing some words of advice and encouragement for students. “It was a fun evening,” said Jane Simpson, Foundation President. “This year’s theme took many of us out of our comfort zone, but we had a great time with it. The light heartedness hopefully helps students relax and hear a positive message before they leave Davie County for schools around the state. We are proud of all of them!”

A special thank you goes to Kathy and Pat Miller, who provided Harley Davidson shirts and hats for the volunteers, Cathy and Grady McClamrock, and Tim Smith who brought choppers to decorate the room, and to Kathy who provided lots of photos of Davie County business people who enjoy the ride. “We wouldn’t have had nearly as much fun without the help of these experts,” said Gladys Scott. “We are also very thankful for our wonderful sponsors who made the evening possible. We had a great ride!”
