2011 ~ A Night at the Oscars
Davie Community Foundation hosted their own version of the Oscars May 10th to celebrate the high school scholarships awarded through the Foundation.
Guests arrived at Hillsdale United Methodist Church to see the limo parked in the front with the red carpet ready for the entrance of the “stars.” Dressed to impress, student stars and their families were treated to a pre-Oscars reception with delicious hors d’oeuvres prepared by Pearls of Empowerment members.
Pearls also staffed the kitchen to ensure the quality of every bite served to the stars. SURF Board members Ryan Budd, Ellie Carter, Robert Daniel, Stephen Daniel, Evan Dowell, Brianna Eichorn, Matthew Ellis, Sam Linville, and Zach Osborne served the stars. “The SURF Board looked great and did a terrific job serving our guests,” said Meridith Cheek, Foundation office manager.
Guests gathered for the Oscar presentations in a room with star studded backdrops created by Foundation intern Ryan Budd. “We would never have completed such beautiful backdrops without Ryan,” said Foundation president Jane Simpson. “He worked with us at the perfect time to prepare for this special event.”
The program opened with the music of the Davie High Vocal Ensemble who really set the mood of excitement for the presentations. Foundation hosts Phil Fuller, chairman of the Board, and Jane Simpson introduced board members, spouses, and staff to make the Scholarship Oscar presentations. Twenty-nine high school stars received an Oscar statue to commemorate the evening.
A Lifetime Achievement award was also presented to George and Brook Martin. The White-Martin Scholarship they started in 1972 has made a difference in numerous students’ lives over the thirty-nine years it has been awarded.
Post-Oscar cake cutting was hosted by committee co-chairs Will Marklin and Bill Steed. It was a wonderful ending to a wonderful evening. “I thought tonight was perfect,” said Phil Fuller. “Everyone looked great, the students felt special, and Hillsdale was the ideal location to host the Oscars. The donors really liked the opportunity to mingle with the student stars. I think it was a special evening for everyone!”
