The Community Foundation of Davie County hosted its first Scholarship Dinner on May 21, 2006. The dinner “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” was planned to honor the scholars and their families whose scholarships are administered by the Community Foundation as well as the donors who made the awards possible. guests were greeted at the door with a passport for the evening. Escorts, board members John Ferguson and Neal Foster, guided them to their special location. Volunteer Christy Schafer planned beautifully decorated and very creative tables to represent the USA, France, London, the Arctic, Under the Sea, South of the Border, Space, the South Pacific, the Orient, the Rainforest, and Egypt. All guests visited Italy for a dinner organized by volunteer Earlene Ferguson.
The highlight of the evening appeared to be the special hats that guests were asked to wear to represent their location. “I was amazed at how cooperative everyone was with the hats,” said Jane Simpson, Community Foundation president. “I think they really broke the ice and encouraged everyone to relax and have a good time. It was a really fun evening.”
Scholars were presented with their own hardback copy of Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” They were reminded by board member Marlene Carter that their diploma was their boarding pass to all kinds of future opportunities. “You are embarking on a journey that will take you many places and in many directions. Hopefully the silliness of the hats will remind you not to take yourselves too seriously.” The Community Foundation currently administers 13 Scholarships benefiting 27 Davie County young people for 2006-07. Twelve of the thirteen scholarships are permanently endowed so they will benefit Davie County students forever.
