2011 Grants – $26,700 awarded!
A Storehouse for Jesus – $3,000
In March of 2011, A Storehouse for Jesus started a Women’s Clinic to serve women in Davie County who have no health insurance. The Clinic is a place where these women can receive medical tests and medications to attain and maintain optimal health. Laboratory costs at Storehouse average $1,000 per month even with a discounted rate. A Storehouse for Jesus will use the grant money to help pay for laboratory testing to diagnose female problems and to fund medications to treat those problems.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Davie County – $5,000
Big Brothers Big Sisters will use the funding to implement a new school based mentoring program called Mentoring Matters. This program will focus on helping elementary and middle school students achieve educational success by providing tutors to reinforce reading and math skills. BBBS is to serve as the coordinator for community adults willing to volunteer their time. The first year they will serve Mocksville Elementary, Cooleemee Elementary, and South Davie Middle. Classroom teachers, guidance counselors and parents will identify those children who need additional support in academic areas. Along with help with reading and math these children will benefit from having an extra caring adult in their lives.
Camp Manna – $4,000
Camp Manna conducts a summer day camp for area school age children. Each week the camp is focused on a particular theme and character building principle. The funds will be used as scholarships for children of single mothers needing financial assistance in order for their child to attend.
Davie County Pregnancy Care Center – $3,000
DCPCC has implemented the JEWYL (Just Earn While You Learn) program. This program rewards new or expectant mothers with vouchers after they have completed educational sessions on a variety of parenting topics. The vouchers are then used to “purchase” baby items (i.e. baby beds, high chairs, baby mattresses, diapers, wipes, etc.) from the JEWYL Closet. Because the federal standards for baby cribs and car seats change frequently, many used cribs and seats are not in compliance. The Pregnancy Care Center will use the funds to purchase needed items for the JEWYL Closet.
The Dragonfly House Children’s Advocacy Center – $3,000
The Dragonfly House requested funds to train staff members in the “Darkness to Light Stewards of Children” program. After facilitator training, these staff members will then conduct workshops in Davie County. These workshops are designed to educate community leaders who work with children to increase their awareness in recognition and prevention of child abuse and child protection policies and procedures. This program has been scientifically proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes and change child-protective behaviors.
Hardison United Methodist Church – Summer Food Bags of Hope – $4,700
Summer Food Bags of Hope Feeding Program provides breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack food to hungry children in our community over the summer. The grant money will be used to purchase food to be distributed during the summer months. The program has partnered with Davie County Schools and the Second Harvest Food Bank. Food items are purchased from Second Harvest Food Bank at a drastically reduced rate. Food is distributed on Thursday during lunch at the three elementary schools that serve breakfast and lunch during most of the summer. Food is also provided to children in high school, middle school and the remaining three elementary schools where needed. Last summer they provided 3,500 meals.
Smart Start of Davie County – $4,000
Grant funding to Smart Start will continue to support the Parents as Teachers program. This program is a family support program that incorporates a home visitation model. A Parent Educator conducts home visits to single mothers of pre-school children, empowering the parent with skills and strategies necessary to be effective parents. Monthly individual and group meetings allow the Parent Educator to work directly with parents helping them to significantly improve their relationship and parenting skills.
