At its November meeting of the Board of Directors, The Community Foundation of Davie County approved the creation of Acorn Funds. Acorn Funds allow a donor to create a named fund with a smaller gift and add to it over the period of several years until it grows to the required granting amount. "Acorn Funds will allow participation by a larger segment of the community," stated Sally Smith, Chairman of the Board. "We want everyone to be able to take part in building a community endowment for Davie County."
Individuals, businesses, and civic organizations may create a named fund with a donation of as little as $1,000. The funds are invested with the pooled funds of the Foundation to encourage faster growth. Annual donations can be made to the fund by the donor or the community at large. Upon growing to a balance of $5,000, currently required by the Board of Directors, the fund will be eligible to make grants to community non-profits and charities. "We are really excited about the opportunity this gives all of Davie County," said Jane Simpson, President. "I have heard from community members that although they wanted to participate in creating a community endowment, the initial $5,000 required to create a named fund was prohibitive. Acorn Funds will now allow citizens to make a smaller gift to create their fund and add to it over several years. This makes building a community endowment a true grassroots effort for the entire county. We hope many people will seriously consider the creation of an Acorn Fund."
Acorn Funds have the opportunity to grow into Donor Advised Funds, Community Unrestricted Funds, Designated Funds, Field of Interest Funds, or Scholarship Funds; giving the donor the ability to support his/her charitable desires in the community. The funds may be created with gifts of cash, stock or property. They are simple to create and will have a long-term positive impact on the Davie County community!
