The Community Foundation of Davie County received its first major gift thanks to the generosity of Davie County resident G. Allen Mebane. Mebane established a $500,000 G. Allen Mebane Administrative Fund to offer support for the administrative and operating expenses of the Foundation and has pledged $1,000,000 in January 2004 to establish the G. Allen Mebane Donor Advised Fund.
Allen Mebane, founder of Unifi, Inc. and current President of the Mebane Charitable Foundation, Inc., has been a Davie County resident for 15 years. "I used to leave before the sun came up and return after sundown," stated Mebane "so I have not had the opportunity to get to know as much as I would like about Davie County. Since my retirement form Unifi, I am enjoying learning about the current programs offered in Davie County. I'm glad to be able to offer support. As The Community Foundation of Davie County grows, so does its ability to support non-profits and their work within our community."
The Administrative Fund established by Mebane will ensure that the Foundation can meet operating expenses, especially during the initial years of asset building. "Allen has reduced one of the greatest barriers in building a community foundation, the ability to operate without interruption during the early years of asset building," stated Foundation President Jane Simpson. "We cannot thank him enough for his generosity and the security he is providing for the Foundation's operations!"
The G. Allen Mebane Donor Advised Fund will support community non-profits. Applications will be accepted annually with recommendations for grant awards coming from the board of the Mebane Charitable Foundation. "I have found giving to be addictive," commented Mebane. "It is a lot of fun to see what can happen when organizations are challenged and rewarded with matching dollars."
The mission of The Community Foundation of Davie County, Inc. is to "advance philanthropy and pool donor assets for the benefit of our community."
